An American crocodile rests on the surface of a mangrove channel in The Gardens of the Queen National Park, Cuba. These large reptiles are called the engineers of the mangroves because they open and maintain channels that increase the flow of water and nutrients. This marine preserve located fifty miles south of Cuba is a Caribbean Eden with robust reefs, rich mangroves and healthy populations of apex predators. Cuba has been successful in protecting this delicate remote corner of the sea that now stands in the path of increased tourism. See more of Cuba's secret sea in @natgeo November issue.
